Chapter 14

Planet surface, Earth 2/Multiverse 732, the Great Pyramid

Dr. Green advanced through the corridor in front of them until they retraced half the distance of their initial journey.

“Find anything interesting?” Jeremy asked.

“So far everything is as it should. I haven’t found anything that brings us closer to any answers, but at least things are functioning as expected.”

Jeremy turned the corner and caught an image on the right side of a room they had just entered. He motioned Dr. Green to stop. Dr. Green opened his mouth to speak, but Jeremy put his hand over his mouth and whispered, “Someone’s in the other room.”

Jeremy slowly bent down until his head was a few inches off the ground and peered into the other room. He retreated and whispered again. “It’s a young woman. She’s tied up, and two men are watching her.”

Dr. Green shook his head and then motioned Jeremy to follow him in the other direction. When they’d traveled two more corridors, Dr. Green spoke, but still quietly. “So I was right. We’re not the only people moving in the bubble. Those working for The Way must have some type of device that keeps them from being affected. We need to find Quinn and Axel.”

“What about the girl?”

“She’s not our problem. And if you notice, she wasn’t frozen either, so maybe she’s part of their organization.”

“Did you not hear the part about her being tied up?”

Approaching footsteps interrupted them. Dr. Green signaled for Jeremy to move in the other direction. As the marching intensified, they quickly retreated towards the beacon. “Almost there,” Dr. Green whispered.

They eyed for an escape route, trying to breathe softly and move silently.

“Two corridors down, there was a small cubicle pedestal. It’s not large enough to completely cover both of us, but if we hurry, it could give us enough cover to allow us to remain hidden from whoever is coming as they pass by.”

Dr. Green strode toward their original position near the beacon. The steps in the distance grew louder, and both soon increased their pace to a quick jog, careful to make as little noise as possible.

“There,” Dr. Green whispered. He yanked Jeremy behind him as they threw themselves down just as footsteps were upon them. They placed their backs against the pedestal away from the entrance and faced the opposing wall.

For a moment, the patter of feet stopped. Dr. Green and Jeremy froze and held their breath like they were the main characters in a horror movie with the killer just inches away. Voices echoed from beyond the entrance. Neither could make out the language the figures spoke, but they kept motionless until the footsteps resumed.

More steps from the opposing direction grew louder until both sets stopped again. Dr. Green assumed they must’ve been members of the same party meeting up. They waited a couple more minutes until the patter faded completely.

“I think they’re gone,” Jeremy said.

“We should return to the sarcophagus and wait for Quinn,” Dr. Green replied.

Jeremy glanced in both directions and headed in the direction of the beacon.
